New Free Books Worth Reading

     I broke down and got a real job. So I have not been paying attention the way I should here at my blog, but now that I am getting comfortable at work I will try to make sure I post at least twice a week and keep somewhat updated on my free book list. Four new books today starting with a book that would be well worth reading for 4.99 or more. A well written historical novel with some sidelights into the paranormal The Silence of Trees is well written and takes you to Siberia during WWII, which for most Americans is a place we know little about. Good stuff. Next is an obvious mistake by the publisher, Moscow Sting is a modern cold war spy novel that stands by itself but ruins the first book Red To Black, which is at the price the second book will be at in a couple of days. Third is a cool twist on the paranormal genre, Coexist (Keegan's Chronicles #1) looks at the life a young elf trying to exist side by side with humans without them knowing. Finally a little non-fiction to warm your mind. Most of the time you hear about the Bombers of WWII you here about the European Theatre but in the new book from Gordon Bennett Robinson Jr. brings his side of the war to us in Bringing the Thunder: The Missions of a World War II B-29 Pilot in the Pacific (Stackpole Military History Series) an exiting and well written account of the Air Battles over Japan that helped decide the war. Good stuff for reading all around.

New Free Books Worth Reading

       Time for some more free books worth reading to add to you Kindle. I am going to start off with one of my mom's favorite author's of all time, Piers Anthony. Piers is doing these three day giveaways of the first books in a number of his series one book at a time, in other words a new book every three days. Today's free book is Pandora Park the first book in the Trail Mix series which is Piers' take on Alternate reality. Also his Trail Mix series, Amoeba and Beetlejuice are just 99 cents today and tomorrow only.           
     Now for the books I am going to put on the list hoping that they will stay free for a whole week. First on the list is a paranormal thriller from Sierra Dean with a smart aleck lead and a nice mix of action and romance called Something Secret This Way Comes (Secret McQueen Book 1). For a taste of less magic and more history I have found Of Blood and Honey set during the troubles in Ireland it has a well researched historical bent with some small paranormal twist to make it fun. Finally for Valentines Day Candy you can cook yourself from our friends at Gooseberry Patch and their easy to use recipes. Official reviews are below.

The lingering effects of the Kesh and Malone prisons are gut-wrenchingly convincing. Less developed are the magical elements. Former prisoner Liam's ignorance of his fae side makes sense, as his mother, Kathleen, and mentor, Father Murray, seek to protect him, but Leicht only introduces one full-fledged fae, Liam's father, and his offstage war with the Redcap is more told than shown. Liam's marriage to Mary Kate is a believable complex of love, lust, pride, anger and forgiveness, but the really pivotal relationship is with Father Murray, a member of an arm of the church that kills the fae in the belief that they are Fallen. Perhaps later books will expand the intriguing premise.

New Free Books Worth Reading

     I have added three new books to my worth reading list. First off we have a fun little romp from L Ron Hubbard called the Iron Duke. Set during World War 2 this was actually pulp fiction when it was written. Good quick read. Pay Me in Flesh is much more modern version of pulp fiction. Bennett writes her own rules on Zombies and you end up with a fun little thriller with a Zombie bent. Finally I found another cool little cookbook from Gooseberry Patch. Quick & Easy Family Dinners are simple and tested recipes that taste great and anybody can use. Remember it is always cheaper to eat at home. Enjoy the books in depth reviews below.

 The Iron Duke In the short space of a few pages, Hubbard gives us a fun, adventuresome character in Blacky Lee and if you are a fan of the sort of hijinx that occur in the OCEAN'S ELEVEN movies or Hitchcock's TO CATCH A THIEF then you're going to feel right at home with your feet curled right next to the fire with this story. Long on wit, short on fat, IRON DUKE is a movie that hasn't happened yet--but should. I would cast George Clooney in the lead with the Coen Bros. as the directing-producing team. This is a story that plays into all their sensibilities and period piece excellence.
I urge all my readers to pick this one up and give it a try. If I were to find fault with any of it, it would be that the story is too short. A small nit to pick to be sure in a story that features con games, sword fights, train escapes, royal politics, humor and romance. --Pulp 2.0

Quick & Easy Family Dinners Cookbook
There's nothing like gathering around the table for a homecooked meal. Our favorite dinners are always those tried & true recipes that have been handed down, or ones shared by a good friend. New Free Books Worth Reading

     Three new books this week worth reading and since it is the new year two are self help type books. First one that I may read but will never actually follow. Organized Simplicity is the name of the book and for those who feel unmotivated to unclutter their lives it makes it easy to do. Rave reviews for both this book and the next one called Unspoil Your Child Fast which is an easy to use guide to easier and happier children. Finally one of my favorite type of books. Dangerous Angels is the first book in the Weetzie Bat series designed to get twelve year old out of their picture books and into regular length books. Like the best of these books this one is fun, a quick read and easy to understand with just enough life lessons to convince you or your child it is worth spending time on. New Free Books Worth Reading

     A couple of great new books worth reading this week. The first is an obvious one for this site as it is called 20 Retirement Decisions You Need to Make Right Now and it has gotten great reviews, including some who believe if you have started working then you are old enough read this book. Another great modern thriller has also been made free, Lion of Babylon from Davis Bunn. It is is placed in the middle east and well worth your time.


      Also free right now is a great pre-order from Tor,  Some of the Best from Tor.com: 2011 Edition: A Tor.Com Original which has some great Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories from newer authors that are well worth reading, as all are well written and some will be the next stars of the genres.

New Free Books Worth Reading

     New year, new free books as the old ones are no longer free. First off some humor. Lois Winston is one of the up and coming stars in the Mystery Comedy field and I am delighted to find the hilarious Assault with A Deadly Glue Gun in the free box this week. For a more serious mystery, Steven James' The Pawn is a rough and ready thriller that is making other authors jealous with it's well crafted story line, and well researched background. Finally for the new year a nice escape from fantasy author J. M. McDermott is the first book in the Dogsland Trilogy Never Knew Another because how can you go wrong with chicks in animal skins carrying swords. More in depth descriptions below.

      Christmas is over and nobody gave you a book worth reading, or you were stuck with the family all day and have already finished it. (Remember to take your book to holiday gatherings to save you sanity.) I have found three lifesaver books worth reading to add to your Kindle and save you. Topping my list this week is a good little historical thriller from William Dietrich called Napoleon's Pyramids. Lot's of good reviews on this book and little bad. From Vince Flynn is a promotional freebie. He is giving away one of his earlier novels, Transfer of Power and adding a preview of his new novel Kill Shot which is now available for pre-order. Finally a title I couldn't resist. Desperate Housedogs is a pampered pet mystery with good reviews and a tongue in cheek style. Enjoy the books and more info on them below.

      Two new books today for the worth reading list. The first is a new sci-fi book from Martha Wells. The Cloud Roads is a well reviewed and less often visited theme well worth your time. Also found another Gooseberry Patch cookbook. Perfect for the Holidays Christmas With Family and Friends is an easy to use cookbook with lots of great cookie recipes and plenty of other recipes to help you through this time of year.

New Free Books Worth Reading

    We have 3 new books on the worth reading list but actually 6 worth reading as a set of short stories went free this week. Let's start with the first book in the Deadly Decor Mysteries Design on a Crime is a well thought out mystery with less quirky characters and more mystery than the cover would lead you to believe. I also found another cookbook and this one is perfect for the holiday season. The Everything Healthy Cooking for Parties Book has some very good looking recipes for all seasons.  Finally we have a set of short stories by acclaimed author Joe R. Lansdale. I am listing the most reviewed so far Incident on and off a Mountain Road which left people breathless. I also recommend getting the other three free stories, Bullets and Fire, The Steel Valentine and Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man's Back as all four are in different genre's from a master storyteller.

New Free Books Worth Reading

Although two of them went up to just .99 I still had three books fall of my free and worth reading list. Replacements have been found. First off is a well written historical paranormal book from Lynn Voedisch called The God's Wife with excellent reviews and a nice look at historical Egypt. More cookbooks for the list. From Gooseberry Patch we have  Slow Cooking Cookbook (Classic Cookbooklets) with some very easy to make recipes. So I went looking through the 23 Free Cookbooks again and found one that looks especially good.  Aprovecho: A Mexican-American Border Cookbook (Hippocrene Cookbook Library) from Theresa Cordero-Cordell has a number of well tested recipes plus some bonus stories on the history of border cooking. If you don't want to clutter your Kindle this is one well worth getting. 

     With Kindles now as low as $79.00 please remember to get one for the reader in your family.

23 Free Cookbooks for Kindle

There are currently 23 free cookbooks on Kindle, all from Hippocrene Books. You know how big a sucker I am for cookbooks, so this is just too cool.


A number of these are repeats from June of this year, but they generally sell for above $10 when not on special promotion. If you are new to Kindle, be sure to grab these now, as they probably won't stay free until Christmas. If a new Kindle and account are being given to someone for Christmas, I'd consider setting up an account for them, just to grab the books or tipping them off to get these ("to read on their PC"). None are lendable.

New Free Books Worth Reading

A pretty big day in the Free Book world. Found a very cool book on cats and protecting libraries for you and your kids Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Alexandria which is getting rave reviews over at Amazon. Also found a trio of new cookbooks. I will start with the most official type of cookbook The Everything Potluck Cookbook with hundreds of recipes to help you through the winter potluck season. 2nd from best selling romance author Barbara Bretton comes a fun cookbook with some cool recipes called A Skillet, a Spatula, and a Dream. Finally a website composite book from instructable authors called Easy Vegetarian Recipes, The instructable books can be a little inconsistent but at free you can't really complain. Finally a couple of pre order books are free today. That means you can order it now for free but you can't read it until it is officially released. First is The Scargill Cove Case Files : An Arcane Society Story from best selling author Jayne Ann Krentz which looks excellent. 2nd is a fun looking weight loss book Tales From the Drunk Diet which despite the hilarious title looks like a good theory book with lots of fun anecdotes from a professional partier.

     Three new books have been added to the free book list. First is an alternate history fantasy At the Queen's Command: The First Book of the Crown Colonies  . The Second is a very well written look at modern life and problems The Journey Home one of those sneaky books similar to Nicholas Sparks early stuff that sucks you in and makes you understand, and cheer for the good people in life as they work through their problems. The third is another wonderful little cookbook in the Gooseberry Patch series, Gingerbread Cookbook with 20 different recipes that work including Moravian Spice Cookies, Yummy! New Additons to Worth Reading List

      Two new books this week for the worth reading list. First off is the thriller Double Exposure From Michael Lister which received 9 five star reviews along with a four star review from customers and a bad review from some snob at Publishers Weekly who thinks people want realism with their thrillers and probably also hated Die Hard. Silly, silly man. Second we have a book that joins America's Funniest Videos and Cops. The Funniest Cop Stories Ever proves once again that humor is in the eye of the beholder and every funny man offends someone or he isn't doing his job. Since the price is free enjoy both.

New Free Books Worth Reading

      Surprisingly I only had one spot open this week on the free books list. Fortunately I had two good books to choose from. The one I went with is from a new author, Mary Logue called Blood Country it is a mystery set in rural Wisconsin. It has pretty good reviews and likable characters so it should be enjoyable reading on a non existent budget. The other book was an entertaining weight loss book that also uses good principles for weight loss called The Case of the Unwanted pounds: A Weight Loss Mystery. It gets points also for a cover appropriate for the time of year. I did read the sample on this and as someone who has done a little studying on weight loss I can tell you that this will work and is pretty easy to follow. Enjoy the reading.

New Additons to Worth Reading List

     Time to add some new blood to my free book list. In honor of Halloween I have found a self published collection of  Halloween poem's called Witch. Football fans may be appalled at the loss of a kicker for the Saints, but mystery fans will enjoy The Dead Saint a nicely paced addition to the Bishop Lynn Peterson Series. For old time science fiction fans The Last Drop from authors L Sprague De Camp and L Ron Hubbard is another page turner worth adding to your digital library.

New Free Books Worth Reading

   Since it is Monday, the publishers decided to start charging for some of last weeks free books. So I found some more. First on the list is Skulduggery Pleasant: Scepter of the Ancients a wonderful adventure targeted at a younger audience that will hold up with older readers who like both horror and fantasy. Next is another solid mystery Penumbra, set in the south in the early fifties, it really gives you a feel for the time without losing the mystery itself. Finally getting reading for the biggest meal of the year gets a little help from the guys at Gooseberry in Thanksgiving Cookbook, aptly named and easy to use. Enjoy

Modern Free Mysteries

     Today some comedic  mysteries came free. Both are the first book in new series but there the similarity end. From Peggy Webb comes a fun little mystery called Elvis and the Dearly Departed, an eagerly awaited debut with good reviews. From new author Delia Rosen comes another southern setting, this one with the twist of a New York Deli in Nashville called A Brisket, A Casket. Reviews are a little bit more mixed but that is to be expected in a first novel. Also now available free for the umpteenth time but still worth downloading if you are a beer fan is Beer is Proof God Loves Us: Reaching for the Soul of Beer and Brewing from UC Davis professor Charles Bamforth. It is a nice little history of the brewers art and modern brewery system. All in all a better haul then yesterday.

New Free Books Worth Reading

     It being the top of the month all my old free books worth reading are now at new higher prices, so I had to pick some new ones. Topping the list is another cookbook, Pumpkin Cookbook a perfect fall addition to your repertoire with the reviews saying it has a good mix of recipes. Next is an old bit of fun from L Ron Hubbard called The Black Ensign, a great piece of pulp fiction from the late thirties and early forties that still reads well today. Next is on of the most referred to stories in Science Fiction The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of the most inventive and creative books ever written. Finally another classic in the Sci-Fi genre, H G Wells - The Time Machine. These last two are from the publisher Vook who really does a good job of making sure the electronic version is clean and readable. Enjoy

     I am reading the newest book in the Kay Scarpetta series from Patricia Cornwell for free on my kindle. How you ask as it is 9.99 at Amazon.  We checked it out from the local library. The best place for free books has gone wireless, and not just here in Knox County but likely in your county too. Go to your library website, and enjoy reading for free or a small one time fee (cost is different from county to county). Even better enjoy this great value without leaving your home as even if you don't have a kindle most libraries now let you check out books on-line and then mail them to you.
